Richard Jackson... What I'm reading now!

Richard Jackson - Marketing and Communications Associate

Cover: How we Decide by Jonah LehrerThink about the last decision you made. Perhaps the choice of a brand in the supermarket, or what to watch on television. Perfectly rational, wasn't it? You considered all the alternatives, weighed up according to some criteria, and made your choice.

If this narrative rings true for you, chances are you're in a very small minority, or perhaps you're telling yourself stories about your decision making processes which aren't quite true. As Lehrer tells it, our classic model of rational decision-making has a lot to learn from recent discoveries in neuroscience.

How We Decide dissects the brain and its operations to explain counterintuitive findings: we learn about how the brain is wired to learn, the role of emotions in decisions, how the brain accounts gains and losses, how we frame problems and cherry pick data according to our biases. Along the way, we uncover the underlying neurological reasons why we make mistakes in decisions.

It's a great book for anyone who wants make better decisions by understanding the decisions they make; it's also very useful for understanding the decision making of others so that you can better influence positive outcomes.

And on top of all this, highly readable!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

How secure are we?

A recently completed Independent Review of the Intelligence Community (IRIC) led by Associate Professor Rufus Black and Mr Robert Cornall AO, assesses the state of our intelligence agencies after a decade of legislative and funding changes. The findings on the whole are that we are moving in the right direction to meet "the new geo-political and technological realities facing Australia as a middle power with global interests".

Clearing up the climate debate

"At 'The Conversation' we thought, just for a change, that those who research atmospheric science, geology, meteorology, physics, economics, marine science, mathematics and psychology – a few of the varied fields that intersect with that nebulous beast we know as "climate change" – might like to talk about just that".
